Upper Arlington Ohio is an enclave of the City of Columbus, home of Ohio State. We’ve been working through local Guild members on this project for a couple of years, and now the push has come to shove.
This event should be styled predominately as a Rendezvous/Project, in that we will be teaching all the time, but we do have two structures to build.
Two independent timber frames are to be assembled into one structure in a ten day volunteer event. The first frame is a historic frame measuring 20x30 in plan. This frame needs extensive restoration and beam replacement before standing. Upon completion of repairs this frame will be lifted by hand. The second frame is new, measuring 32 x60 in plan, fabricated and delivered to the site prior to the volunteer event Vermont Timber Works (VTW) ready for assembly. We anticipate a simple but large scale mechanical raising on this one; lots of power equipment.
We will involve participants in professional-level ‘rehabilitation carpentry’ on the small frame, and best-practice rigging, raising and safe site management on the big frame. Participants will be free to move back and forth between frames as our needs and your interests dictate. We expect to be teaching 100% of the time.
